Umbrella company contractors working within the construction industry will be pleased to learn that Chancellor George Osborne has announced major reforms to the planning system aimed at increasing house building and boosting productivity.

These proposals are part of the Chancellor’s ‘Fixing the Foundations’ package; with the aim to not only increase people’s chances of getting on the housing ladder, but to also increase job opportunities.

Mr Osborne commented, “Britain has been incapable of building enough homes. The reforms we made to the planning system in the last parliament have started to improve the situation: planning permissions and housing starts are at a seven-year high.”

He added, “But we need to go further and I am not prepared to stand by when people who want to get on the housing ladder can’t do so.

“We’ll keep on protecting the green belt, but these latest planning reforms are a vital part of a comprehensive plan to confront the challenge of our lifetime and raise productivity and living standards.”

Commenting on the proposals, The IPSE (Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed) policy adviser Alex McLeish, said, “Today’s announcement from George Osborne regarding the relaxation of planning laws, in particular on brownfield sites, has come as a welcome and timely piece of news for the self-employed within the construction industry. The need for increased levels of house building was a key part of the Conservative’s manifesto and IPSE is glad to see this pledge turn into firm policy. The UK desperately needs additional housing stock to meet demand in the market.

"Measures to support SMEs within the industry should in turn benefit the self-employed, as they are a vital part of the construction sector. The self-employed are crucial in enabling house builders to respond quickly to any further demand unlocked by these proposals.”
