A new survey has revealed that UK umbrella company contractors are looking for greater professional HR support as well as a more holistic approach from umbrella companies.

Recent research surveying 160 contractors has revealed that access to an employee portal was deemed the most important factor when choosing an umbrella company to trade through.  Of those surveyed, 87% agreed with this.

Another 82% stated that a good on-boarding or welcome process was second on their list of what to look for in an umbrella company, and 79% said that access to HR support was the next most important feature.

Sixty-four per cent of respondents said access to an employee benefits programme was a key factor, with the top benefits including medical insurance, critical illness cover and a discounted gym membership.

Managing Director of giant group, Matthew Brown, said, “It’s clear from the results of this survey that contractors are no longer just after the admin support and salary security that has previously been associated with professional employment providers.

“The changing world of the contractor is leading to individuals actively seeking greater holistic support in order to be more effective in managing their own careers.

“These professionals have the technical expertise to deliver against the key objectives of clients and understandably want to focus their time on delivering the specialist services they are known for.

“In order to do this, contractors are clearly seeking the HR and benefits support that has long been available to permanent employees.”
