A recent survey has revealed that government investment into projects such as Crossrail, has resulted in engineering contractors finding themselves in high demand.

According to latest research, more UK engineering contractors are finding work from railway services due to this type of government investment.

Findings from Giant Group have shown that 16% of those trading in the engineering sector have reported working on rail service projects over the last 12 months.  This figure has risen compared to the previous two years, with 1% working on these types of projects in 2013, and 2% in 2012.

Another report by the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) revealed similar results, finding that job opportunities for engineer contractors had in fact risen by 22% year on year – this figure rose by 5.2% in the last month.

These increased opportunities have certainly been the cause for many contractor engineers’ growing optimism, as 57% have said that they are expecting their rates of pay to increase within the next year.

Matthew Brown, Managing Director of Giant Group, said, “The results from our latest survey highlight the impact infrastructure investment has had on the contracting market.  And the good news is this should be sustainable in the longer term.

“At the moment the main demand is coming from the Crossrail project, however there’s also the planned development of HS2 and the proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport in the pipeline.  This means opportunities should be abundant for engineering contractors for the foreseeable future.”
