With the UK experiencing freezing temperatures, this has resulted in many professionals deciding to go back to the office, rather than working from home.

The CV-Library survey of 1,700 workers revealed that 20.5% said they chose to change their usual working patterns and return to the office because of the recent cold weather.

Unsurprisingly, 41% admitted they decided to go into the office purely to save on heating bills, while 17.7% did so to save on electricity.

Nearly half (44.2%) said they needed more social connection after extreme weather conditions had kept them in their homes more than usual.

Some professionals would’ve preferred to have gone back into work, but they chose not to because of the following reasons:

  • Public transport is too unreliable in this weather (10.7%)
  • There’s no space in the office for me to work (7%)
  • I don’t feel safe driving in the icy conditions (6.6%)
  • I don’t want to drive due to the cost of petrol (5.5%)

Lee Biggins, Founder and CEO of CV-Library, commented on the findings, “These results reflect not only the impact the weather has on the UK workforce, but how the cost-of-living crisis and mental health have also become key factors within modern working practices.

“Britain’s greatest obsession is often reported to be the weather but its impact on the economy is a serious topic. The knock-on impacts of the severe weather aren’t just limited to reduced consumer spending and supply and distribution issues.”
