Umbrella company contractors might be interested to learn that a recent survey has revealed that as many as 42% of people dream of becoming their own boss.

The recent research, carried out by Centre for the Modern Family, found that despite this, only 5% of those surveyed believe that that will be able to make this a reality.

According to the data, respondents said that it was the added flexibility that made them want to join the contracting sector the most, however, the worry of not having some of the benefits of permanent working, such as workplace pension schemes, was a factor putting them off.

However, just over half of the self-employed workers surveyed said that they chose flexibility and control over their permanent job and are happier for it, especially those with children.

Anita Frew, Chair of the Centre for the Modern Family, commented on the survey, “To a growing number of people, self-employment offers a chance to structure a rewarding career around family life.

"However, our research suggests that the pressures and stresses of being their own boss may, for some, be too much for a family.

"With more and easier access to practical and financial support, individuals may feel better equipped to make their path in self-employment less stressful for themselves and their families, and bring them more of the benefits which attracted them to self-employment in the first place."
