A new report has revealed that many women are rejecting promotions, with one of the top reasons being due to having imposter syndrome.

The research, from ESSEC Business School, found that while 40% of women experienced imposter syndrome when offered a promotion, almost half felt there to be a big difference between a promotion in theory and the job reality.

When citing other (more personal) reasons for not accepting a promotion:

  • 20% said they would be dissuaded due to fear of professional exhaustion.
  • 55% were concerned a promotion would inhibit a different life goal.
  • 44% were worried it would mean having less family time.

Professor Vivian de Beaufort commented, “It is more about a desire for meaning, for work that is fulfilling. Perceived as distinguished and rare to have gained positions of power, even some women who do reach senior positions tend to remain grateful nonetheless because they are convinced they do not deserve their position due to the impostor complex that plagues minorities.

“Do the cards ever change hands? No one can say, but now women with valuable backgrounds are more often daring to demand new rules for the game.”
