A recent report has revealed that the skills most in demand for IT contractors are now based more on mobile phone projects, rather than the previous search engine and social media optimisation.

The survey, which was carried out by freelancer.co.uk, analysed 189,917 IT contractor projects in the second quarter of 2012, which were posted on its website.

Umbrella company contractors working in the IT field may be interested to hear that the number of mobile phone projects posted by clients increased by thirty-six per cent when compared to the first quarter.

Internet marketing projects, such as search engine optimisation and link building have both fallen by 7.3 per cent and 8.3 per cent.

Matt Barrie, freelancer.co.uk chief executive, said, “Two clear trends are evident: firstly user activity is moving to mobile devices and the trend won’t be reversing any time soon, as the other five billion people on this planet join the internet, primarily through mobile.

“Secondly, the internet is becoming more interactive, and the technologies that are winning and will continue to win are open standards like HTML5 and jQuery – to the detriment of the incumbent proprietary technology providers like Adobe and Microsoft.”

Barrie added, “We truly are at an inflexion point of the technology landscape.   “We’re seeing the changing of the guard across the technology industry when we examine our detailed online jobs data.”
