With the news that it will be mandatory for NHS staff to have their covid vaccination from April 2022, it’s been suggested that this could very well exacerbate the sector’s skills crises.

This is according to the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), which warns that the care sector could quickly become critical as a result.

Tania Bowers, Global Public Policy Director at APSCo, explains, “The clinical and care sector is already facing a significant skills shortage which is reflected in the number of healthcare roles that are listed on the government’s shortage occupation list. The sector has already lost talent as a result of Brexit, so to put this additional caveat on clinical and healthcare professionals at a time when they are arguably needed most is less than ideal.”

Bowers added, “We’re already seeing members facing difficulties attracting new candidates as individuals push back on this requirement. While the delayed roll-out of this mandate is welcome as we approach the Winter months when demand on the sector will no doubt spike, the roll-out from April will exacerbate what is already a difficult recruitment market for clinical and healthcare roles.”

“While we urge the government to reconsider mandates for both the NHS and care homes, we will be working closely with our members to ensure they are best-equipped to support the growing demand for professionals that we’re expecting as this date nears.”
