A new report has revealed that there are now around 1 in 3 working people who have a side hustle – this contributes as much as £70 billion to the UK economy every year.
Data shows that this figure has grown by 66% over the last three years, with over a quarter admitting they need this second income in order to meet the basic costs of living.
The report, compiled by StandOut CV, used a number of sources to put together a picture of the UK’s 2025 side hustle economy.
The research shows that side hustles are most popular among 25-34-year-olds, with 35% having one. This is followed by:
- 45-54-year-olds (28%)
- 55-64-year-olds (23%)
- Those aged 65+ (20%)

Looking at side hustle earnings, the average Brit takes home £780 per month (just under £10,000 a year), with male side hustlers making 64% more than women with a second income.
Information Technology is the most lucrative industry, with roles such as developers and IT consultants being the most popular and netting an average of £622 per month. The second best is marketing, advertising & PR, with people earning an average of £495 monthly.

- Flexible work (22%)
- Filling market gap (22%)
- Pay off debt (18%)
