Self-employment rises, but government needs to support contractors more, say experts

(2 minutes to read)

Umbrella company contractors will be interested to learn that the number of people in self-employment has increased significantly over the last few months.

Latest results from ONS employment figures have revealed that the number of people working as self-employed in the UK has risen from 273,000 to 4.79 million in the three months to August.

The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) have commented on these recent findings.

Lorence Nye, IPSE Economic Adviser, said, “The continued rise of self-employment is generally good news for those who work this way, and for the UK labour market. It offers people the flexibility to work how and when they want. Once people try self-employment, they rarely want to work any other way.

“The fastest growing group of self-employed workers are the highly-skilled, specialist experts – the technicians, engineers, and consultants. Studies have consistently shown the majority of those who work this way make a positive choice to do so.

He added, “However, the Government could do more to support people who choose to be self-employed. Extending tax-deductible training to the self-employed would make it easier to up skill and earn more for their work.”
