The 2012 ‘predictions’ have begun, and we found the one from The Centre for Retail Research especially interesting! According to The Centre, by 2015 at least 25% of all online purchases will be made using mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, which is great news for umbrella contractors with specialist skills in the m-commerce arena.

This prediction was backed up by figures from Paypal which showed that, on a specific day in the US in November 2011 known as ‘Cyber Monday’, more than three times as many people use their mobile phones to make purchases than the same day the previous year. Apparently one person even bought a £70,000 Ferrari from an online auction site using his mobile phone! There is also an increase in the use of barcode scanners to check prices, and ‘mobile wallets’ as a trusted means of paying for online purchases, which could well overtake the use of credit cards in the longer term. All of which therefore represents another opportunity for specialist umbrella contractors who have skills in these areas. And if you’re an IT contractor that works through an umbrella company and you don’t have these specialist skills yet, it could well be time to brush up on your m-commerce!
