A new survey shows that social connection is a significant factor for good wellbeing, particularly among 25 to 34-year-olds.
Younger generations rated their mental health as good or excellent, which is well above the 62% average across all age groups, with happiness levels and sleep quality standing out too.
Keep Britain Working report
Aviva’s recent Keep Britain Working report highlights that the key to good health lies not just in diet and exercise, but in meaningful relationships, community involvement, and a strong sense of belonging.
This could be a crucial factor to consider for employers looking to keep staff happy and healthy, and to avoid sick days caused by poor mental health.
Key findings show:
- 66% who rate their mental health as good say they feel a sense of belonging in their local community. By contrast, only 20% of those with poor mental health said they feel a sense of belonging to their local community.
- 73% of 25–34-year-olds intentionally spend time in nature to support their wellbeing, compared to 65% across all age groups.

- 28% of 25–34-year-olds regularly participate in community groups, clubs, or social activities—nearly double the average across all age groups of 15%.
- 73% of 25–34-year-olds volunteer, with a fifth (20%) doing so through their employer. This compares to around two in five (43%) who volunteer across all age groups.
Dr Subashini M, medical and sustainability director, Aviva Health UK, said, “Wellbeing isn’t just about individual habits. It’s about feeling connected, supported and part of something bigger.
“Employers have a vital role to play in fostering these connections. The workplace should be a space of psychological safety, where people feel seen, heard, and valued. Wellbeing isn’t just about individual habits—it’s about the people around us, and the strength we draw from them.”
