Umbrella company contractors might be interested to hear that latest research has revealed the capital to be the most popular place for contractors to work in the country.

Recent data compiled by the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE), shows that the number of contractors working in London has increased by 59% over the last nine years – this has made the capital the fastest growing region for self-employed numbers.

Other findings reveal that since 2008 there has been a 95% increase in the number of female contractors in London, as well as a 40% growth in males across the same period.

Interestingly, 18% of these contractors working in the capital specialise in artistic, literacy and media professions.

Chris Bryce, IPSE CEO, commented on the latest findings, “London is a global powerhouse in innovative, flexible and advanced work. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the capital is a hub for freelancers. There are a large number of supportive communities and co-working spaces in the capital, which are changing the freelance game, and flexible economy in London for the better.

“However, we must all recognise the striking rise in women freelancing in London, and ensure they are properly supported in this way of working. In areas such as Maternity Pay the self-employed receive reduced support. At IPSE we’re working to see this change.”
