Umbrella company contractors will be interested to hear that there has been a call for priority with regards to protecting the UK's highly skilled contractors from any potential post-EU rule changes.

Marcus Green, Nova Contracting director, commented, “Anything which could reduce UK businesses’ access to the vital pool of temporary workers in the UK, or limit its attraction for workers in the UK and from Europe, would be disastrous for the sector and our economy. Contractors provide vital flexibility, particularly during times of change.

“More than 16% of the contractors on our books currently are from EU countries, including Poland and Romania. We need clarity on their status in a post-EU world and that of new migrants helping to meet the ever-increasing demand for temporary workforce, particularly in the transport and logistics sectors.

He added, “Agencies and contractors would also welcome some indication that the newly-formed cabinet recognises our sector’s vital contribution to the UK economy. Placing employment flexibility at the top of the priority list for the current consultation on IR35 would be a clear signal that the views of the contracting community are being heard and valued.

“The new Chancellor Philip Hammond has ruled out an Emergency Budget, but his Autumn Statement will be a strong opportunity to demonstrate support for temporary workforce and the essential role it plays in meeting the challenge of supply and demand.”
