Good news for IT contractors who are based in the capital, as a recent report has shown that these pay rates have seen a year-on-year rise.

The report, which has been carried out by international recruitment giant Robert Walters, revealed that pay rates for London freelancers and contractors using umbrella services, who specialise in the IT sector, have risen by 3.4 per cent year-on-year.

For example, the Robert Walters’ Salary survey results have shown that C# developers, project managers and senior analysts rates have gone from approximately £400 in 2011, to £500.

The increase in pay for IT contractors with the right skills is likely to continue as the finance sector looks for those that understand statutory, regulatory and compliance platforms.

It has also been predicted that the demand for IT skills, including the need for umbrella company contractors, shows no signs of slowing down with the many businesses needing these expertise in order to develop and move on in the digital world.

Manager of IT Recruitment at Robert Walters, Matt Bartley, said of the findings, “The fact that increases in contract pay dwarf rises in permanent salaries is not only good news for IT contractors but also indicative of where employers’ priorities lie at the moment.

"Many are looking to bring in IT specialists capable of making key improvements over a pre-defined period.

"The pay benefits on offer have meant that a number of professionals in permanent roles are now considering contracting as a serious option.”

He added, “The number of infrastructure projects has also increased significantly lately. This has led to demand for information and security specialists as employers seek to ensure their systems are as robust as possible.

“The move towards cloud computing continues to gather momentum across the market.  As VMware is the predominant technology, specialists in this area are particularly in demand.”
